Overview

The ascent of Phari Lapcha Peak to an elevation of 6,017 meters in Nepal offers an adventurous mountainous terrain. Among Nepal’s 33+ popular trekking peaks, Phari Lapcha stands out with its authentic and alluring alpine environment, providing an ideal setting for a thrilling climbing experience.

Initially included in the permitted trekking peak list in 2002, the journey to the summit promises an exotic and captivating mountaineering adventure. Located in the Solukhumbu district along the Mahalangur Himalayan Range, which is also home to Mount Everest, Phari Lapcha boasts an altitude of 6,017 meters above sea level, classified under the group “A” among Nepal’s climbing peaks by the Nepal Mountaineering Association. Opened for climbing in 2002, it has become a beloved destination for peak climbing enthusiasts following their trekking experiences in Nepal.

The Alpine-style climbing involves navigating steep mixed ice and rock formations at a relatively lower altitude. Phari Lapcha itself features two summits, with the East Summit slightly lower at 5,977 meters. Occasionally confused with Dawa Peak (5,920m) to the northwest, it has been referred to as Phari Lapcha West, although it is arguably a distinct peak in its own right.

Utilize this time to fine-tune your gear, understand emergency procedures, and recharge before immersing yourself in breathtaking landscapes.

Arriving at Lukla by plane is amazing! The airfield below and the mountains surrounding it give the pilot the impression that this is an impossible feat. However, these are seasoned veterans who have completed hundreds of these tasks!
Hike for a few hours to Phakding after your trek crew picks up your bags and maybe after having a cup of hot tea. This is where you'll spend your first night in the Himalayas!

We cross the Dudh Koshi River on suspension bridges today as we approach the Sagarmatha National Park and rhododendron forests. When you get to Namche, you'll see why it's the trailhead for so many climbers and hikers—this lively town is the result!

Resting is never a part of acclimatization! Staying active is the best method to help your body adjust to the high altitude. So we venture outside to take in some of the local sights. The primary attractions of Khumjung village are its historic monastery—which was renovated following the 2015 earthquake—and its association with Sir Edmund Hillary.
Of course, the Everest View Hotel offers a stunning view of Mount Everest, which is the reason you came. Come on by for a cup of coffee and take in the breathtaking Everest vista from their terrace.

Hike up the Dudh Koshi Valley after breakfast, then descend into forests of pine and rhododendron, where the trail splits.
Admire the awe-inspiring landscapes of Thamserku, Everest, Ama Dablam, and other mountains while traveling by several Buddhist stupas and waterfalls. At the trail's split, we bear left to travel in the direction of Gokyo Lakes and continue until we arrive at the settlement of Dole.

Starting from Dole, we will take the path that ascends along the side valley, passing through various summer settlement areas before reaching Machhermo. Moving on from Machhermo, our journey leads us to the Gokyo lakes. The trail involves a gradual descent, following the meltwater rivers of the Ngozumpa Glacier. Subsequently, we embark on a steep ascent into a valley, passing by the initial lake of the Gokyo series. We then reach the second and third lakes, with the third one famously known as Dudh Pokhari or Milk Lake. Heading towards the eastern shore of Dudh Pokhari, we will settle for the night in the Gokyo village.

Today, we commence our day early with a morning hike to Gokyo Ri, renowned as one of the premier viewpoints in the Everest region. This vantage point offers breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and other prominent peaks in the Khumbu region. After a challenging two-hour uphill trek, we will reach the summit of Gokyo Ri, situated at an elevation of 5340 meters, where we can relish the awe-inspiring sunrise over the towering mountain ranges. Following a serene moment at the summit, we descend back to Gokyo, dedicating the remainder of the day to exploring the captivating glacial valley of Gokyo.

Having enjoyed a fulfilling day at Gokyo, we proceed to advance along the path leading to the base camp of Phari Laptsa. The trail involves a gradual ascent through alpine vegetation, guiding us to a favorable campsite situated at an altitude of 5,520 meters. Upon reaching the base camp, our dedicated crew promptly establishes the camp and conducts essential health checks. Subsequently, preparations are made by the crew for setting up a higher-altitude camp in readiness for the upcoming ascent to the primary summit of Phari Laptsa Peak.

Today's trek is relatively brief but requires a significant level of commitment. Departing from the base camp, we will traverse a trail characterized by steep ascents, often covered in snow and ice. Employing ropes and crampons, we ascend to a favorable campsite positioned at 5,720 meters. Upon reaching the campsite, our Sherpa team efficiently establishes the camp and conducts thorough checks on all climbing equipment essential for the impending ascent to the main summit of Phari Laptsa Peak, scheduled for the following day.

After achieving full acclimatization and ensuring proper equipment, we embark on an early start with the goal of reaching the summit of Phari Laptsa Peak before noon. This strategic timing aims to avoid the challenges posed by strong winds in the afternoon. Under the guidance of experienced climbing experts, we navigate technical sections on our ascent to the summit, where we are rewarded with close-up views of Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, Pumori, Baruntse, Ama Dablam, and other prominent peaks in the Khumbu region. Spending a brief yet meaningful time at the summit, we descend along the same route, ultimately returning to the Base Camp.

Having successfully reached the summit of Phari Laptsa Peak, we proceed with a relaxed pace on our return journey from the base camp. We follow the familiar trail through the picturesque Gokyo valley, retracing our steps. A leisurely lunch awaits us at Gokyo, after which we continue our trek along a relatively straightforward trail, ultimately arriving back at Machhermo for the overnight stay.

Following breakfast, we depart from Machhermo and embark on a straightforward downhill trek, passing through summer settlement areas to reach Dole. The trail from Dole involves a steep descent through a dense rhododendron forest, leading to Phortse Tenga.
