Overview
In the Everest region, there is an adventurous and technically challenging trip called the Gokyo Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp trip. It includes visits to well-known locations such as Tengboche Monastery, Gorak Shep, Namche Bazaar, and Everest Base Camp, but it is particularly noteworthy for its trip to the Gokyo Lakes across the high-altitude Cho La Pass. Long days (8 to 9 hours) are required for the trek, which offers breathtaking views of rhododendron forests, waterfalls, high pasturelands, chortens, and prayer flags.
It’s important to get used to the altitude in Namche Bazaar so that you can visit neighboring sights like Syangboche, Khumjung Village, and the Khumjung Hillary School. The route passes via the Ngozumpa Glacier to arrive to the turquoise Gokyo Lakes. A highlight is the strenuous trek up Gokyo Ri, which provides acclimatization for the strenuous ascent to Cho La Pass and offers sweeping views of Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu.
Trekkers begin around 4 or 5 am, confronting a difficult day at elevations over 5,300 m, including snowy terrain, in order to cross the pass early and avoid winds. The journey continues to Gorak Shep, Everest Base Camp, and Kalapatthar, or Everest View Point, providing opportunities for amazing photo ops as well as a sense of accomplishment. It’s a distinct and rewarding adventure, even with the difficulties of long and exhausting walking days. The rewards are in the form of personal accomplishments and lifelong memories. Alternatively, a helicopter tour of Everest Base Camp is recommended for individuals looking for a less taxing choice.
